Behavioral Strategies Conference: THIS IS A FOOTBALL

This October, we'll offer a replay of last autumn's four-part virtual program, THIS IS A FOOTBALL. The presentation takes its name from those first four iconic words Vince Lombardi spoke on the first day of training camp in his Green Bay Packers' 1961 season.

They had come so close to the championship the previous season, the players could have been forgiven for thinking that with harder work and perhaps a few key refinements, they were ready to go all the way. Lombardi would have none of it. His conviction was that to be sure of winning, the team needed to go back and start building all over again from the most granular fundamentals. (They won the championship game going away. It was long over by halftime.)

So let it be with the beliefs and practices of the Behavioral Investment Counselor. You and I are in possession of the one great truth that governs investment success, namely: The dominant determinant of long-term, real-life returns is not investment performance but investor behavior. Unaided, human nature will just keep on making the same fatal mistakes – chasing fads during major market advances, then panicking entirely out of equities in bear markets. Our job consists roughly 20% in helping people make a rational and robust long-term plan, and 80% in keeping them from blowing that plan up.

But how do we "sell" that? How do we create an enduring and intensely credible value proposition, entirely apart from the economy (which can never be forecast) and the markets (which can never be timed)? What must we say, and how ought we to say it?

THIS IS A FOOTBALL consists of four sessions averaging 45 minutes in length. The first three sessions completely lay out the fundamentals, notably including how we prospect with an essentially planning/behavior-based approach. The fourth session is a Q&A/Objections Handling Clinic, in which we answer all the most common questions about – and potential objections to – our system.
